About / Justin

A systems thinker.
A practical builder.

I’m motivated by understanding how things work, questioning the assumptions beneath them, and following an idea into the details needed to build or test it.

What I bring to a team

My background spans roughly a decade in Canadian naval service, marine systems, technical authority responsibilities, project coordination, and independent product development. That combination has taught me to connect technical detail with the operational setting in which a system must work.

I have served as the technical authority for shaft-grounding systems and worked with auxiliary electrical equipment requirements, procurement, policy, and lifecycle considerations. My civilian work includes marine consulting, the James Whalen Tug hull survey, restoration project delivery, and entrepreneurial electronics development.

How I approach a problem

Look for the whole system

I’m interested in interactions and constraints: what a change affects, where interfaces fail, and how one discipline’s assumptions become another’s requirements.

Take ownership of the details

The marine display project reflects my preference for following a concept across hardware, circuitry, programming, and physical packaging.

Translate complexity into action

Technical writing, requirements, procurement, team coordination, and project planning connect the idea to work that other people can execute.

Stay curious across disciplines

My interests range from electronics and materials to quantum foundations and metabolism. I use that breadth to generate questions, then work toward a specific model, design, or test.

The person behind the projects

I enjoy visualising how components and mechanisms fit together. I’m drawn to problems that reward persistence, independent learning, and a willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries. I value conversations where an idea can be challenged constructively and improved through evidence.

My research portfolio reflects that curiosity. My engineering background supplies the complementary habit of asking what is required, what could fail, and what needs to be checked next.

Opportunities I’m interested in

Electronics development, marine instrumentation, embedded-system integration, prototype development, applied research, and technical project delivery. I’m based in Ontario, with an interest in opportunities in the GTA and Niagara corridor and in suitable remote collaboration.
