Engineering / Featured project

One display.
Many connected disciplines.

An independent marine multifunction navigation-display project, developed from scratch across circuitry, hardware integration, programming, and enclosure development.

Status: design / prototype development. Production readiness and marine certification are not claimed.

STM32PROCESSINGMEMORYDISPLAYGNSSCANSYSTEM ARCHITECTURE / CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATION

Simplified architecture illustration—not the actual PCB layout.

The project

Through Waking Giant Marine, I undertook the design and prototyping of a multifunction marine navigation display. The aim was to bring several interacting subsystems together into a coherent device, rather than treat the circuit board, software, screen, and enclosure as isolated tasks.

What I took ownership of

System definition and electronics

Working from the desired device behaviour toward the hardware, circuit interfaces, and component requirements needed to support it.

Hardware and software integration

Developing the relationships between processing, communications, display functions, and physical hardware.

Physical product development

Considering enclosure development and how the electronics become a usable marine device.

Review and iteration

Using design review to expose interface issues and define the next engineering work before a production release.

Architecture under investigation

The earlier Altium design review identifies an STM32-based architecture with external SDRAM, a display interface, GNSS-related circuitry, and CAN communications intended for marine-network integration. These are design elements; their presence in a schematic does not establish successful operation or protocol certification.

What this demonstrates

The value of this project is the breadth of ownership: developing a concept across circuitry, programming, integration, and packaging. It is an example of self-directed technical learning and of approaching a product as a complete system.

Development status

Further electrical review, firmware verification, fabrication documentation, and bench testing are needed to substantiate performance and manufacturing readiness. Detailed design discussion is available by enquiry.

Where I can contribute

I’m interested in electronics product development, embedded hardware integration, marine instrumentation, prototype development, and research teams that need someone who can move between the overall system and practical implementation.
